Waterton Wildflower Festival On Now

In amongst Rocky Mountains and prairie floor , hundreds of species of brightly colored wildf flowers thrive in Waterton Lakes National Park.  The Waterton Wildflower Festival takes place June 19-27,2010.  The nine day event  features the diverse regions of Waterton that are home to 50% of all wildflowers found in Alberta. Over  80 different  events explore, photograph, see, and smell  Waterton;s  extraordinary wildflower displays.  Take a look at art exhibits, try out a photography workshop, explore Waterton on a  guided walk or take a boat cruise through the heart of   magnificent  Waterton. Courses include: Wildflower Identification, Wildflower Habitat, Bird Watching, Wildflowers by Horseback and by Cruise Boat, Photography Workshops, Watercolour classes, Afternoon Tea and much more.
Activities throughout the 9 days are led by highly qualified professionals.
New this year : Margaret Best Master Botanical Artist and Teacher will offer: Blue Spectrum Wildflowers in Detail  The 3 day class will  study the basic forms found in plants and learn how to achieve a 3-dimensional quality in botanical watercolours . Margaret will focus on botanical watercolours using specific blue pigments to depict local wildflowers such as lupines, clematis, gentians and  blue grass.
 
Diatoms-Waterton's Smallest Native Plants-   New Species Debut!!!!
Loren Bahls will present "Exploring the Little World of Diatoms:  Waterton's Smallest Native Plants." A NEW species of diatom from Waterton Lakes National Park:  Stauroneis akamina will be debuted!

Rare Plants:
Waterton has more than 50!  Thirty are found Only here.
John Bain, University of Lethbridge professor,  will profile Waterton specialties.
