Daniel O'Donnell
Arts & Entertainment

Daniel O'Donnell was born in Kincasslagh, County Donegal, Ireland. His career started to take off after he recorded and released Johnny McCauley's My Donegal Shore in 1983, with $1,200 of his own money, selling most of the copies himself. Later that year, he formed his own musical group, Fever. After the group disbanded, he formed The Roots. In 1985, the manager of the Ritz label, Mick Clerkin, saw him perform, and introduced him to Sean Reilly, who remains his manager to this day. O'Donnell is also good friends with Cliff Richard and the two have performed together on many occasions. In 2002, he was awarded an honorary (due to his Irish citizenship) MBE for his services to the music industry. He has had twenty UK Top 40 albums as well as fifteen Top 40 singles and has sold 10 million albums worldwide.

Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden Childrens' Festival
Festivals & Special Events

Celebrate Children’s Day at Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden. This family event features a variety of entertainment, including raising of the koi (fish) nobori (wind socks), Japanese storytelling, chopstick lessons, dancing, plus other activities and events. History: Go-sekku (the Five Festivals) were celebrated in Japan by farmers who sought the help of the kami, or gods, to mark subtle changes in weather that accompany each passing cycle of the moon. Go-sekku were held to move the cycle of life forward and bring crops to harvest successfully. The Go-Sekku were held on odd-numbered months and days, considered particularly auspicious when doubled—1/1, 3/3, 5/5, 7/7 and 9/9. Since Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden is closed on both 3/3 (Hina Matsuri - Doll Festival) and 5/5 (Tango no Sekku - Boys' Day), Kodomo no Hi or Children's Day will be celebrated on 5/10/08, the first day of Nikka Yuko’s summer season. The government of Japan in 1948 decreed 5/5 (Kodomo no Hi) to be a national holiday to celebrate the happiness of all children and to express gratitude toward mothers.

Hagoita Exhibit May 2008
Arts & Entertainment

Hagoita are rectangular wooden paddles, originating in Japan, ostensibly used to play hanetsuki, but often instead serving a more ornamental purpose. These are frequently painted, usually with lacquer, with auspicious symbols, or decorated with complex silk collages. This tradition dates to the 17th century, and although the game itself is now rarely played, crafting decorative hagoita is still commonplace.
